I Love Her Style..."Zoe Saldana"

Tall and slim, Zoe Saldana knows how to work with the curves (or lack there of) that she has been given. Being slim and tall-ish myself, lol, I understand how hard it can be to put a little bit of "ooomhp" on your frame and how dressing to compliment that body type can be difficult at times. However, Zoe is always on point with whatever she decides to put on and that's what I love about her style. She never shies away from what works for her, like showing off her amazingly long legs, and brings it always. She emphasizes what she loves about her frame, and dresses with comfort and elegance and just a touch of daring...all that I have come to appreciate aesthetically. Zoe knows how to dress for herself and I always love to see what she wears on the street, just as much as I love to see what she wears on the red carpet...a pleasant surprise every time.

Blogger Love...

I am all about looking at blogs...they are an amazing outlet for creativity and self-expression. It's great to see the amount of love that is put into every blog to let it's readers see a little bit of the blogger themselves and how they want to relate their message to the world. I am constantly looking for new blogs to love, whether it's dedicated to natural hair or to fashion or to everyday life or all of the above. Here's a list of some of the blogs that literally take over my Macbook's Top Sites:

  • Urban Bush Babes- I absolutely love this site that popped up onto the internet last year. The insights of Nikisha and Cipriana are some of my favorites and I always appreciate learning things from these two women.
  • CurlyNikki- This is one of the first blogs dedicated to natural hair that I laid eyes upon and fell in love. I had the opportunity to meet Nikki during a natural hair meet-up last year and truly love this blog even more!
  • HeyFranHey- A blog with information on all things natural...from hair to health. I love the advice that is given by Fran and the picture posts are always drool worthy, lol! I also had the pleasure of meeting her last year and she is just as sweet as she is on her blog.
  • Naturally Obsessed- Another blog dedicated to natural hair care that I love. Shana's hair is thick and beautiful and the techniques that she applies to her hair are worth the look.
  • Hi-imcurrentlyobsessed- A tumblr page full of beautiful submitted pics of women in all their natural goodness that I can't help but take a peek at everyday. Inspiration at it's best!
  • Black Girl Long Hair- Great site for information on all things natural hair.
  • TheFrenzyTV- A blog created by my super talented friend Franny. Filled with her personal thoughts, everyday life and current topics on fashion...it's a great site to feast your eyes on all things to know and appreciate. I love taking a look at her features and seeing her do big things! She also was kind enough to support the start of my own blog and gave me a much loved shout-out! She's also a new natural head, lol. Check it out!
  • TheMopTopMaven- Although this site is now defunct, I think it is still worth a look for advice on natural hair. Say what you will about Nikole Crowe, but when this site was poppin'...it was poppin' and I give her credit for that.
  •  Karla's Closet- A blog started by Karla Deras that is one of my favorite to visit. Pictures galore of Karla in some of the most amazing outfits that her mind can create are amazing to look at. She is doing alot with her time...even collaborating with Roman Luxe to put out an amazing collection of jewelry for all to own.
  • Trop Rouge- Model Christina Caradona has this amazing blog filled with pics of her life and her fashion sense. I always like to take a look at what she's posting and wearing, a mixture of high and easy finds from everyday stores.
  • Lookbook- One of my favorite sites for pics of everyday people wearing fabulous clothes.
  • Style Pantry- A great site of personally amazing everday fashion sense by Folake Huntoon. Her style is impeccable and her hair....to die for!
  • Song of Style- Aimee Song has a great sense of fashion and it is always a pleasure to watch her mix and match the clothes that she owns....creating amazing outfits every single time.

Some Hairspiration...

Nothing gets me more excited than looking through magazines and the internet at different natural hair styles. Big curly 'fros and braids and twists always make my day and help give me a new idea of what I want to try out on my own head of hair. It's also great for a little natural "hairspration" of where I would love for my hair to be, even if I have to pray to get it there, lol! Here's a little bit of hairspiration for your eyes:

It's Only Natural..."Dyeing Natural Hair"

Recently, I was having a conversation with one of my friends about natural hair care and she brought up the process of dyeing hair. She always dyed her hair when it was relaxed but hasn't done so since going natural and was unsure of how her hair would react to the change. Now, dyeing natural hair is always a process to think about. Up for consideration is the type of dye and the kind of color that you can choose. Everyone's hair reacts differently to dye. I dyed my hair a beautiful burgundy in January 2010 and I was in love with the color. My hairdresser had to use two bottles of the color because my natural hair was not taking the color easily and was looking jet black after one bottle. In the end though, I loved the fact that it gave me a different look, but what I didn't love was the fact that at times my hair was a bit dry at the ends. I had to make sure that my hair was properly moisturized at all times to allow for retention of moisture and my ends were becoming a bit frazzled. I took that as a sign that maybe the dye and me were no longer best friends, lol.

However, dyeing natural hair is a great form of self expression and can allow for the change you crave when dealing with natural hair. There are many types of dyes to choose from and if you are not getting it done professionally here are a few of the choices that are available:

1) Temporary Hair Color (Rinse): This is great for testing out hair color due to the dye just coating the hair cuticles, allowing for somewhat of a rinse of color. The hair shaft is never penetrated by the color, therefore letting the rinse last about a month, but usually washes out after a few shampoos. However, this depends on how often you shampoo your hair.
2) Semi Permanent Hair Color: This are like a stain for your hair. The hair dye is made for darkening the hair and adding richness. It also coats the hair almost in the same way that temporary hair color does, but lasts a little longer...about 4 to 8 weeks. Great hair color without the overall commitment.
3) Permanent Hair Color: This is the real deal and not for the commitment phobes out there. This dye lasts until you either change the color or let your hair grow out (which was the option I took after I realized that my hair color no longer agreed with me). This type of dye has a high level of peroxide and works well in natural hair, since it is not already weakened by the process of relaxing. Permanent hair color is a fantastic way to change up your style.

Highlights are another choice in hair dye, but it is a process that can be done by a professional for the best overall outcome.
Once your natural hair has been dyed, it's all about the upkeep of it. Remember to moisturize your hair as often as you can and try to add in color protectant shampoos and conditioners into your usual hair routine. Some great color protectant products are:

DevaCare One Condition- Ultra creamy to help give moisture to color treated hair.

DevaCare Low-Poo- excellent shampoo for natural color treated hair, since it has a mild lathering and is sulfate-free to help combat dryness.
Quidad Climate Control- Great conditioner for helping to maintain frizz and gives complete color protection.

Shorts and Candy

I'm sooo in love with the cutoffs and heels look. I think the key to pulling it off without looking too tacky...is to have a little more on top and a pair of delicate heels. Chunky heels are great to wear with the look too, but I think a looser cutoff would be a better choice, for a little masculine/feminine vibe...that is always on point. (I made this looking for inspiration for my cutoffs/heels look).

My Hair Stories..."From HairStyles Past"

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I constantly have my hair in twists and braids as a protective styling method. I never have the exact same hairstyle twice (even though as I type, the "High Bun" is currently growing on me as a fav I have to try again!). It always gets me excited to try new styles in my hair, just because I can, lol!  A few weeks ago, I begged my hairdresser, Nellie, to send me pics of my previous hairdos. Since she's usually very busy...I waited patiently to hear a ding from my iPhone to let me know when a pic would arrive. And yesterday...I finally heard the long awaited ding!! Nellie sent me a few so far, but it's enough for one to get a peak into the world of my ever-changing hair. Enjoy!

It was from this style that I created my last work updo

As you can see...I love me some variations of the fauxhawk, lol. More to come!
